The goal of safety testing on side airbags is the reduction in the risk of injury to passengers in an impact with parts the vehicle interior, for example, the B-pillar, even after the seats have been used for years. An element here is abrasion testing, in which a fabric-covered test piece rubs across the backrests, thus simulating years of wear, especially when getting into or out of the vehicle. During subsequent airbag tests in a closed climate chamber, the airbag is released at temperatures of from -40° to +90° Celsius, and its deployment times recorded using temperature-protected high-speed cameras. The high-speed films also serve when analyzing component movements of the paneling and other coverings. None of these parts may come loose, thus posing a danger of injury for the vehicle's occupants. The tests also serve to improve the overall safety of vehicle interiors.
